Linklaters has appointed emerging markets head Stuart Salt as its new Asia managing partner.

Salt (pictured) will replace Zili Shao in the role as of 1 February. Shao was appointed Asia managing partner in May 2009 but announced in November that he is set to leave the firm at the end of January to become chairman and CEO of JP Morgan's China business.

Salt will relocate to Hong Kong for his new role, having been back in London since 2008 when he stepped down as Asia banking and projects head after a three-year spell.

He has been a partner with the firm since 1992 and focuses on M&A, projects and structured finance. Upon taking on the Asia managing partner role, he will join the firm's 11-member executive committee, which is chaired by firm managing partner Simon Davies.

Davies said: "Stuart's broad-based expertise as an international lawyer, combined with his significant regional management experience and success in Asia, make him ideally suited to the role of Asia managing partner. I have absolute confidence that in Asia we will go from strength to strength under his leadership."

Salt added: "I am really excited about my return to Asia and to working with our team there in providing a first-class service to our Asian and global clients."

Linklaters has also launched a consultation to find a new head of the Emerging Europe, Middle East and North Africa (EEMENA) group – a position which Salt took up last year when he replaced retiring partner Nick Eastwell in the role.

Linklaters launched the EMEENA practice in 2007, after decided to spin off its Central and Eastern European practice. Salt will continue to head the group until the firm names a replacement.
