Shearman & Sterling has promoted one lawyer to its partnership in London, with the firm making up seven lawyers worldwide.

The annual promotions round has seen litigator Richard Kelly made up in the City, taking the number of partners in the office to 26.

Overall this year's promotions are slightly down on 2009 when the firm added two new partners in London and 11 worldwide.

The bulk of the 2010 promotions come in the firm's New York hub, which has received three new partners working in the project finance, litigation and regulation practices.

Paris and Duesseldorf gain one new partner apiece in arbitration lawyer Mark McNeil and corporate lawyer Martin Neuhaus respectively. Former London-based counsel Iain Elder has been promoted to partner in Abu Dhabi, becoming the sixth partner in the office.

Separately the US outfit has announced its counsel promotions for the year, with nine lawyers appointed to the position.

Property lawyers Paul Balaam and antitrust practitioner Antonia Horrocks have made the grade in London, while Washington, San Francisco, New York, Frankfurt, Paris and Hong Kong gain one new counsel each.

Last week DLA Piper announced its 2010 promotions, with 41 lawyers joining the firm's partnership around the world.

The firm's City office received the largest share of the UK promotions, with three new partners made up in London.

In total, nine partners were promoted in the UK, with Leeds and Manchester gaining two new partners apiece, while Liverpool and Edinburgh each gain one new partner.
