Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group has appointed David Casement into the newly-created role of European general counsel.

Casement, the former general counsel at Chubb Europe's commercial lines department, joined the Japanese insurance giant last month. He has been charged with building an in-house legal capability as well as forming the company's first legal panel.

In the past Mitsui Sumitomo has used a number of legal advisers in Europe, including Beachcroft, Hill Dickinson and Berryman Lace Mawer. Casement has begun a panel process which is expected to go to tender shortly, with the expectation that it will be completed by the end of June.

Casement is also looking to build an in-house legal team and has met with the executive team to kick off the hiring process. In the short term the team is likely to consist of two to four lawyers, who will cover all of the company's European legal issues.

Casement told Legal Week: "Putting together a legal panel is one of my key priorities. It will be the first formal legal panel which will cover all of our external legal relationships from the top down to bring greater rigour to it. We have been well serviced by our business advisers but it is easier to manage if there is a formal panel in place."
