Cobbetts has struck up an association with Egyptian law firm El Said Darwish & Partners in the first stage of the firm's plan to build up an international network.

At the end of last year the national firm set up a Swiss Verein structure, named Cobbetts International, with the intention of forming associations with overseas legal practices.

El Said, which has now been renamed as Cobbetts International Cairo, is the first firm to join the network.

The Cairo-based firm has a wide offering in areas including energy, aviation, real estate, corporate, commercial, dispute resolution, banking and finance and tourism and entertainment, and has clients including PICO International Petroleum, Arab African International Bank and gas company BG Egypt.

The association will give Cobbetts access to the Middle East and North Africa, where the firm's corporate team recently won a new mandate off the back of advising a number of natural resource companies listed on the Alternative Investment Market.

Cobbetts now plans to build up further associations to further its international offering.

Cobbetts managing partner Michael Shaw said: "Having experienced strong demand for our services in the Middle East and North Africa over recent months, it became apparent to us that we needed representation in that area. Alongside our natural resources team, we also feel that there are strong opportunities in the region for our other specialist sector practices.

"Bearing in mind the current instability in certain areas of the Middle East, Egypt provides us with a stable environment from which to securely develop our profile and presence in the region.

He added: "Our colleagues at Cobbetts International Cairo are well connected and enjoy excellent reputations derived from their experience in acting for international companies. As a result, Cobbetts International will be able to realise the myriad of opportunities available in the Middle East and North Africa region, where it has already won several mandates."
