Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) group general counsel and group secretary Miller McLean is to retire at the end of April, it was announced today (25 February).

McLean's deputy group general counsel Chris Campbell, who has been at RBS since 2005, will become the bank's new GC.

Current deputy group secretary Aileen Taylor will take over as the group secretary role as of 1 May.

McLean, who has been at RBS for almost 40 years, was first appointed group secretary in 1994, taking on the top legal job after the bank combined with Natwest in 2000.

Campbell joined RBS in 2005 from Dundas & Wilson, where he had been managing partner for nine years.

The news comes as RBS announces pre-tax losses of £3.6bn for the last financial year.

The bank's deputy chief executive, Gordon Pell, is also set to step down at the end of March, having been at RBS for 10 years in a variety of roles.

RBS group chairman Philip Hampton said: "I am extremely grateful to Miller for his dedication, loyalty and outstanding contribution to the group over a long and distinguished career spanning nearly 40 years. He has played a critical role over the years and we wish him a long and very happy retirement."
