BT has appointed former Cable & Wireless legal chief Daniel Fitz as its new group general counsel, replacing Anne Fletcher in the role.

Fitz, who will join BT at the end of March, was executive vice president, general counsel and company secretary at technology firm Misys from 2003 to 2009, before which he spent 12 years at Cable & Wireless in a number of roles, including group general counsel.

Fletcher will leave BT after 24 years at the telecoms giant, nine of which she spent as group general counsel.

Last September BT finalised the line-up of its global legal panel, with CMS Cameron McKenna landing a first-time appointment alongside Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

The process, which was led by Fletcher as part of an effort to reduce the company's legal spend, saw around 50 firms pitching for roles.

The telecoms giant's UK real estate advice is handled by a separate panel headed up by HBJ Gateley Wareing and Trowers & Hamlins with support from Bird & Bird, Cripps Harries Hall and Wright Hassall.

BT is currently reviewing its panel arrangements for international litigation and employment advice, for which the company currently turns to HBJ, Proskauer Rose and Simmons & Simmons.
