Allen & Overy (A&O) has announced its annual partner promotions with the magic circle firm making up 18 new partners worldwide.
The round will see the appointment of just two new partners in the firm's City base as of 1 May, while the vast majority – 89% – of the promotions come outside of the UK.
The majority of the promotions come in Europe with three appointments in Amsterdam, two each in Frankfurt and Luxemburg, and one each in Brussels, Budapest, Milan, Paris, Warsaw and Moscow.
The firm has also made up one new partner each of its offices in Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore.
The promotions mark a further reduction on last year when 20 were made up to the partnership, which in turn was a reduction from 28 in 2008.
The majority of promotions come in the firm's core corporate and capital markets practices.
Only three of the promotions are of female lawyers, a significant reduction on last year, when eight of the 20 new partners made up were female.
A&O highlighted that this is the third year running that the firm has promoted a majority of new partners outside of the UK.
Managing partner Wim Dejonghe commented: "Over half of the firm's turnover continues to be generated outside the UK and two-thirds of our work is cross-border, involving offices in two or more countries, so these promotions are a reflection of our continued commitment to strengthening our international network and investing in the future of the business."
