"I qualified in September 2009 at a finance firm but was not offered a role on qualification. The market for NQs in finance/corporate is dreadful. However, I have been offered an in-house role in Hong Kong working in the Asia-Pacific region at an international commercial organisation.

"Senior lawyers have advised me about the risks of moving in-house so soon after qualification because NQs need to develop refined legal skills in private practice for a few years before moving in-house. I don't want to restrict my career in the long term by going in-house with a shallow legal foundation of skills.

"Will moving in-house now be short-sighted? Will it means it is virtually impossible to return to private practice? I have been doing pro bono for six months on a low wage, and I have a strong CV, but have not been able to secure a private practice role. Taking this decently paid in-house role means I can at least remain working in law. But would I be best advised to hold out a bit longer in the hope that a private practice role comes up?"
