Mayer Brown has recruited Hogan Lovells partner David Alberts in New York, marking the office's fifth lateral hire so far this year.

Alberts, a legacy Lovells partner in the UK firm's insurance and reinsurance practice, left after the recent Hogan & Hartson tie-up on 21 May to join Mayer Brown's corporate & securities practice and insurance industry group.

Alberts, who joined Lovells in 1999, specialises in corporate finance, complex regulatory and structured finance in the insurance and reinsurance industries.

Kenneth Pierce, the head of Mayer Brown's global insurance group, said: "Dave is a world-class practitioner in the insurance industry who is well-known and highly regarded among insurers, reinsurers, investment banks and investors.

"His experience and understanding of the issues, coupled with his longstanding relationships with major companies in the US, Bermuda, Europe and Japan, will assist in diversifying our portfolio."

Alberts said: "The firm's strong track record in M&A and corporate finance, along with its strength in the insurance field, as well as its global strength in Europe, Asia and Latin America, made it an ideal choice for me."

Mayer Brown hired capital markets partner Josh Cohn from Allen & Overy in February 2010 to its New York office to help launch a global derivatives and structured products practice for the firm.
