Irwin Mitchell has made up two non-lawyers to the firm's equity, becoming one of the first UK top 50 practices to convert to Legal Disciplinary Partnership (LDP) status.
Financial director Mark Dakin and costs manager Steven Green have become members of the firm's equity partnership after the firm converted to LDP status on 1 May.
LDPs, which form a key plank of the reforms ushered in by the Legal Services Act, allow non-lawyers to form up to 25% of a law firm's partnership.
The changes came into force in March 2009, but to date, Halliwells is the only other UK top 50 firm known to have taken up the option after last May adding IT director Dene Rowe and facilities director Pam McKay to the firm's partnership.
The move comes at the same time as Irwin Mitchell's annual promotions round, which has seen eight lawyers made up to the firm's salaried partnership, taking the total number of partners to 147.
The total number of promotions is an increase on last year's round, when five were made up.
The firm's Sheffield office has gained the most new partners with three, while Leeds and Birmingham receive two new partners each, with the remaining promotion in the firm's Manchester base.
Irwin Mitchell managing partner John Pickering (pictured) commented: "The legal market is changing all the time and the promotion of two non-lawyers for the first time to equity status is an important one, but it's just one of many innovations in recent years which put Irwin Mitchell at the vanguard of change in the legal sector."
The firm is currently conducting an active lateral recruitment process to build up areas including corporate, family and litigation. Last year the firm added commercial litigation partners Andrew Bell, Julian Luke and John Lord to its Manchester office from Halliwells.
