'Connect' partnership conference highlights Asia as predominant emerging market to target in future

Allen & Overy (A&O) has highlighted growth in emerging markets as a key strand among a number of strategy updates, outlined at the firm's partnership conference last week.

The conference, which took on the tag-line 'Connect', was the firm's first meeting of its entire partnership since 2008. Partners discussed strategy under three broad topics: clients, practice groups and geography.

On the subject of geography, partners pledged to invest in emerging markets growth in the next few years, especially in Asia. There was also discussion about the need to add weight in European markets such as Germany and Spain.

Senior partner David Morley (pictured) told Legal Week: "We are targeting selected growth to add depth in certain jurisdictions. Emerging markets is a key strand of our strategy."

Under the client heading, the meeting saw A&O present client research undertaken on the firm's perception in the client community. Going forward, the firm hopes to boost client perception of its technical skills.

A number of guest speakers, including BG general counsel and former A&O partner Graham Vinter, gave presentations on how partners should handle relationships with in-house counsel.

Discussing practice groups, the firm reiterated goals set out in its last five-year plan from 2008, which saw it target expansion in dispute resolution as well the aim to raise the profile of the corporate practice and retaining strength in finance.

The conference, held in Barcelona, saw the attendance of 430 A&O partners. An additional 50 people attended from A&O alliance firms such as Trilegal in India, Saudi Arabian Abdulaziz Al Gasim Law Firm and Romania's Radu Taracila Padurari Retevoescu.

It also saw the attendance of partners from the private client team that spun off from the City giant to form Maurice Turnor Gardner as part of A&O's firmwide restructuring early last year.
