Clifford Chance (CC) City partner Nigel Wellings is set to relocate to Dubai next week (30 June) as the magic circle firm moves to boost its corporate offering in the region.

Wellings has spent his entire legal career with CC, having joined as a trainee in 1995, qualified as a solicitor in 1997 and joined the partner rank in 2006.

His practice focuses on domestic and cross-border M&A, public takeover offers, listing work and general corporate advisory work, with a specialisation towards the infrastructure and mining sectors.

Highlight deals he has acted on included Chinalco's aborted $19.5bn (£13.1bn) takeover attempt of Rio Tinto last year, where he was the lead partner alongside City corporate Kathy Honeywood.

Wellings will be the third CC corporate partner in Dubai and stay for a three-year secondment during which he will also be responsible for supporting younger lawyers coming into partnership in the office.

He commented: "The international growth of our global corporate practice is a key strategic objective for the firm. The plan is for me to help build up the presence in the office over these three years as we have a lot of young talent coming through. I think it will be a very exciting time-period to be in this region."

CC Middle East head of corporate Simon Clinton said: "[Wellings] is rightly regarded as one of the firm's best young corporate partners and possesses the skills, versatility and personality that are well suited to our clients in the region."

The relocation is the second from the firm's City corporate practice in the last couple of months after newly-promoted (1 May) partner Nicholas Rees moved to Moscow last month.
