Watson Farley & Williams has recruited the head of legal at UniCredit Bank Greece as a partner in the firm's Athens office.

Nikos Kostikas joins Watson Farley's international projects and structured finance group after nine years at UniCredit. He initially joined legacy HypoVereinsbank before the two banks merged in 2005.

Prior to joining UniCredit, Kostikas worked at local law firm Mourgelas Dimitropoulos Konstantelias.

He specialises in advising on corporate banking, financial services, capital markets law and regulatory issues including data protection.

He said: "I wanted to join Watson Farley because it gave me greater exposure outside of Greece and will broaden my experience in the legal sector internationally.

"Although the financial crisis was tough for Greece I think there is a great opportunity now for investors and we are seeing an increasing amount of work coming in."

Kostikas is the third partner in the UK top 50 firm's Athens office, which focuses on international projects and structured finance.

Watson Farley Athens head Virginia Murray, said: "Nikos' considerable commercial banking and structured finance experience emphasises the firm's ambitions to expand its shipping and energy departments to cover both finance and regulatory aspects of banking in the Greek market."

Watson Farley made up two partners in its annual promotions round this year, with Marisetta Marcopoulou joining the partnership in the Athens office.
