Ashurst's head of securities and structured finance Erica Handling is leaving the firm to take up a new role as EMEA general counsel at Barclays Capital.

Handling, who joined Ashurst in 2000, has significantly contributed to the development of the firm's global finance practice, and was part of the team that led the firm's surprise US law launch in February last year with the hire of a 10-partner structured finance team from US ally McKee Nelson.

International finance partner Chris Georgiou has been appointed as Handling's successor as head of the securities and structured finance practice.

Ashurst senior partner Charlie Geffen commented: "Erica has done a terrific job of helping us grow our finance practice since she joined in 2000. The client relationships are well established across a strong group of partners, and Chris is very well-suited to take Erica's place as head of securities and structured finance."

Handling also played a role in bringing in several heavy-hitting partners into the firm's finance practice, including a four-strong team from DLA Piper in Hong Kong in December last year.

More recently, Handling facilitated the hire of Schulte Roth & Zabel finance partner Nick Terras, who previously acted as co-head of securitisation and structured finance at McDermott Will & Emery.

At BarCap, Handling will report directly to global general counsel Judith Shepherd, who succeeded Jonathan Hughes in March last year, having previously served as GC of Barclays' global retail and commercial banking division.
