Allen & Overy (A&O) has named its next Moscow managing partner as Russia head Tony Humphrey is preparing to retire from the magic circle firm next year (30 April).
The firm has appointed Brussels banking partner Peter Bienenstock as Moscow managing partner, who will relocate to take up the role from May 2011.
Humphrey, who was one of the founding partners of A&O's project finance practice, has headed the Moscow office since 2007, having been a partner with the firm since 1981. Meanwhile, Bienenstock, who is a fluent Russian speaker, joined A&O as a partner when it combined with Brussels-based firm Loeff Claeys Verbeke in 2001.
He was appointed to the new role by A&O's management, based on his experience gained from studying in Russia.
Managing partner Wim Dejonghe commented: "Peter's experience and expertise, as well as his enthusiasm for and knowledge of Russia, made him the ideal candidate for the job. Tony has made and continues to make a huge contribution to A&O, and has helped to shape the firm we know today."
Humphrey added: "I am enormously proud of the fantastic team that we have in Moscow and we have great clients. I know that Peter will enjoy working with the team to continue to develop the business in this very important market."
A&O's Moscow office opened in 1993 and is part of the global Russia practice group which has around 150 lawyers in total.
