Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge has boosted its London office with the hire of Squire Sanders' City litigation head.

Rod Cowper becomes the sixth partner in Edwards Angell's London litigation practice, which advises corporates, multinationals and government organisations on commercial disputes and cross-border issues.

Cowper's practice focuses on litigation and international arbitration and he has advised clients in industries including transportation, telecommunications and the financial services sector. He also advises on insolvency and interbank disputes and has experience of advising on fraud and asset recovery matters.

Edwards Angell London managing partner Laurence Harris commented: "Rod's arrival marks the latest step in the expansion of our capabilities in London, which is a strategic priority for the firm. He will enhance the core strengths of our London practice, which include litigation, insurance and reinsurance, and intellectual property."

The hire brings Edwards Angell's UK fee earner count to 84.

Squire Sanders, which is currently in ongoing merger talks with national firm Hammonds, has also named City disputes partner Carol Welu to take over the leadership of its London litigation department.

The US firm's London managing partner Joseph Markoski said: "The merger discussions with Hammonds may impact the look of our City litigation presence. We are hoping to reach closure soon."

Under the blueprint for the merger, which was first proposed in August, Squire Sanders' London office will move into Hammonds' City base.
