Land Securities has appointed its first general counsel and company secretary with the hire of SABMiller's European head of legal.

Adrian de Souza is set to join the FTSE 100 property group on 1 November to take up the newly-formed post. He replaces outgoing company secretary Peter Dudgeon, a non-lawyer, who is stepping down after 12 years in the role.

De Souza has been with drinks giant SABMiller for seven years, having joined from Clifford Chance, and has held his current post for three years. At Land Securities he will lead a 10-strong legal team, including head of legal services Clive Ashcroft, and will report into chief financial officer Martin Greenslade.

De Souza told Legal Week: "I have always wanted to be GC and company secretary at a FTSE 100 company and was delighted to be offered the position at a very exciting time for the company, so this was an opportunity I couldn't resist. The idea is to bring everyone within Land Securities' London and retail divisions together and to provide more legal support for the corporate headquarters. "

Dudgeon commented: "Land Securities has never been dull and, after 12 years, the time feels right to take a break before looking for a new challenge."

In September Land Securities appointed UK top 30 firm Nabarro as the official adviser on its retail parks portfolio, following a competitive tender process. The arrangement, which includes all asset management work for the portfolio, is for three years but Land Securities has the option to review the relationship annually.

In addition to Nabarro, the company works closely with Eversheds and Dundas & Wilson on the property side, with Slaughter and May the main corporate adviser.

SABMiller is in the process of recruiting replacements for de Souza both in his capacity as head of legal for SABMiller Europe and as senior counsel.
