The number of students accepted onto law courses this year saw a slight dip for the first time in three years, according to new research by admissions service UCAS.

The total number of students starting a law course at university or college in September 2010 fell by 2.6% to 16,890, down from the 2009 high point of 17,346.

The figure had risen steadily until this year, with the number of students accepted onto law courses starting in 2010 up around 13% on 2006′s figure.

Despite the decrease in acceptances, the UCAS figures also show that the overall numbers of applicants for UK university places starting in 2010 rose to 71,883, up almost 12% on the previous figure of 64,438.

The news comes after BPP Law School's recent announcement that it is set to open for business in Cambridge, Newcastle and Liverpool next year, with the new branches subject to validation from the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

The new law school branches will primarily deliver the LPC, which will be taught both full and part-time. They will also provide distance learning support classes for the Graduate Diploma in Law.
