DLA Piper's South African arm has hired Eversheds' sole local tax partner Alastair Morphet.

Morphet is set to join DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr in January 2011, taking the number of tax partners at the firm to six.

He has been at Eversheds for two years, joining as a partner in 2008 from South African firm Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs, where he was also a partner.

DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr is the result of a merger between local firms Cliffe Dekker and Hofmeyr Herbstein & Gihwala in 2008. DLA tied up with Cliffe Dekker in 2005.

Morphet said: "I previously worked with [DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr] head of tax Emil Brincker at Edward Nathan, so when the opportunity arose to work together again I decided to take it.

"DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr has a strong tax arm and I felt I could cement myself in the practice easily and it would suit my own practice ambitions.

"I'm keen to do a lot of finance work and this opportunity gifts me that chance."

A spokesperson for Eversheds said: "Alastair Morphet will be leaving the firm at the end of November. Hunter Thyne and Peter Kemp, who are specialised tax practitioners, together with the firm's numerous corporate lawyers with extensive experience in tax and advisory work, will continue to provide its clients with these services."

Morphet's hire brings the total number of partners at DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr to 115.

Eversheds secured its presence in South Africa in April 2008 after agreeing a tie-up with local firm Routledge Modise.
