Career Clinic: Will China connections help me land a job at a big firm?
"I am currently undertaking a training contract at a top 50 law firm outside of the City. As I speak Mandarin, I could be a good asset for an international firm looking to expand into the China market, but I'm wondering if I have restricted myself in my career options, especially since my current firm is not a massive player in the corporate/commercial market. Coupled with this, a clause in my TC restricts me from leaving until after one year post-qualification, and if I spend that year practising in something unrelated to corporate/commercial work, I am worried that I will not be able to make a switch at all.

"I have also considered moving back to China at some point in the future to work there for a few years and see if it helps my career prospects, even if it is in a non-legal field – would I find it hard to get my UK legal career back on track if I did this?"
