Hammonds and Squire Sanders & Dempsey have appointed practice group heads for the merged firm as integration gets underway, with the duo also naming the line-up of its new operating leadership group.
The combined firm has appointed 16 partners to lead 14 practice groups globally, with Hammonds partners securing five of the posts and the remainder going to legacy Squire Sanders partners.
Legacy Hammonds partners William Downs and Joe Markoski in London and Birmingham-based Francois Barker will take on sole leadership of the corporate finance, regulatory and pensions groups respectively.
London-based Hammonds partner Caroline Noblet will take up joint leadership of the combined employment practice alongside Squire Sanders' partner Susan DiMickele, while London-based Hammonds partner Bernard Gilbey will lead the tax practice alongside Squire Sanders' Terry Perris.
The remaining practices will be led from the US offices of legacy Squire Sanders. The banking and financial services group will be headed up by Jim Barresi; environmental, safety and health by Karen Winters; healthcare by Dave Grauer; intellectual property, commercial and IT by David Elkins; international dispute resolution by George von Mehren; litigation by Jim Thomas; property construction and planning by Mike Saad; public and infrastructure finance by Bruce Gabriel; and restructuring and insolvency by Stephen Lerner.
All of the team heads will take on their new roles on 1 January when the merger goes live.
Meanwhile, Hammonds chief operating officer Sue Nickson has secured a place on the merged firm's new operating leadership group, which will deal with the day-to-day running of the firm. She becomes co-chief operating officer alongside Tim Sheeran from Squire Sanders.
They will sit on the leadership team alongside Squire Sanders chairman Jim Maiwurm, who becomes global chairman of the merged firm; the US firm's managing partner, Howard Nicols, who becomes managing partner for the Americas and Asia; and Hammonds managing partner Peter Crossley, who becomes managing partner for Europe.
The firm will be governed by a 13-person global board chaired by Maiwurm and including Crossley, Nicols, six legacy Squire Sanders partners and four legacy Hammonds partners.
