WINNER: Berwin Leighton Paisner

Finalists 2010: Berwin Leighton Paisner; Clyde & Co; Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; Hogan Lovells; Sullivan & Cromwell; Travers Smith

Neville Eisenberg, longstanding managing partner of Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), was on hand to collect the Law Firm of the Year Award, which was decided by the judging panel on the night.

BLP beat strong competition from the other contenders. It won the judges' approval for the transformative journey it has been on under Eisenberg's watch. Since its creation via the merger of Berwin Leighton and Paisner & Co in 2001, BLP has been the definition of the innovative, upwardly-mobile City law firm.

If anything, BLP has in recent years become even more imaginative, with the firm pioneering its own 'virtual firm', Lawyers on Demand, and this year launching its Managed Legal Service, which is designed to work in partnership with major clients by assuming elements of their in-house legal function.

In April, Thames Water appointed BLP as exclusive legal services provider in a five-year fixed-price deal and in September the firm was signed by IT and telecoms firm Colt on an exclusive basis to meet all its employment law needs.

The firm also has an active corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme with a well-above average 30% of its staff taking part in CSR activities in 2009.

In 2010, BLP performed strongly in Legal Week Intelligence's Employee Satisfaction Report, coming fifth in the ranking of top 20 firms. Despite the impact of a prolonged period of turmoil in the property markets, the firm has remained a respectable financial performer in recent years.

As the UK gears up for the impact of the Legal Services Act next year, BLP looks to be one of the best positioned firms in its weight class.
