Walkers has launched a tax practice in Ireland with the hire of William Fry partner Anthony Smyth, marking the offshore firm's first venture into providing tax advice.

Smyth is set to join Walkers' Dublin arm in March 2011 from the Dublin office of William Fry, where he has been leading the financial services and inward investment tax practices.

He will head the practice alongside a handful of associate hires, with details still to be confirmed. The firm already hired Maples and Calder tax associate Petrina Smyth as a partner for the new practice in December 2010.

Walkers Dublin and London managing partner Vicki Hazelden said: "Tax in this jurisdiction is obviously crucial to our core practice areas and the structuring of our clients' investment funds and finance transactions.

"Therefore, establishing a substantial tax practice with first-rate expertise is key for the Dublin office and a natural progression for the firm as it moves into the onshore world."

Smyth has been a partner at William Fry for the past four years and will take the number of partners in Walkers' Dublin office to seven.

Walkers launched its Dublin office in August 2010, marking its ninth office worldwide. It also has offices in the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Delaware, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jersey and London.
