Offshore law firms Appleby and Conyers Dill & Pearman have cut a number of jobs in Bermuda in response to reduced work levels in the region.

Appleby has made 11 redundancies in Bermuda, including two lawyers, with business support units bearing the brunt of the cuts. The firm said it had taken the decision in response to reduced workflows over the last two years.

Meanwhile, Conyers Dill has reduced headcount by 13 in Bermuda.

Appleby Bermuda managing partner Shaun Morris said: "Appleby has taken these steps reluctantly and after a lengthy period of review.

"We thought long and hard about any alternative measures we could adopt but unfortunately we concluded that we needed to make a reduction in overall headcount as one of a number of cost containment measures."

Conyers said the firm had no plans to make any additional staff in Bermuda redundant for the foreseeable future.

Appleby has 12 offices worldwide. The firm's most recent office expansion was in spring 2010 when it opened in Guernsey with the hire of four lawyers from rival offshore law firm Ozannes and the relocation of City banking and asset finance team leader David Clark.

Conyers Dill announced in June 2010 that it is looking to launch an office in the Channel Islands. The firm currently has 10 offices worldwide.
