FTSE 100 energy giant National Grid has cut back its UK legal panel by 25 percent, appointing 16 law firms to the roster.

Allen & Overy (A&O) and Linklaters have been appointed as the company's main corporate advisers, with Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), CMS Cameron McKenna and Eversheds mandated to advise on commercial, construction and disputes work.

Other firms to win appointments on the new-look roster include Irwin Mitchell, SNR Denton, Walker Morris, Martineau, Hammonds and Field Fisher Waterhouse, with the panel divided into sub-panels covering areas such as debt recovery, employment and energy & regulation.

The review was led by National Grid's legal and procurement teams, together with an external consultant, with National Grid bidding to introduce fixed pricing and other billings solutions wherever possible.

Group company secretary & general counsel Helen Mahy, said: "The appointment of this new panel following an extensive and rigorous selection process reinforces National Grid's key requirement for high quality, cost effective and innovative law firms to support our own professional in-house team. We have conducted a similar review and selection process to support our US legal function in parallel with this process."

National Grid last reviewed its legal panel in 2008. A spokesperson for National Grid said four firms appointed at that time have not been reappointed including Wragge & Co and Pannone. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, which sat on the previous panel, did not tender.
