Leading UK law firms have again failed to make the grade in The Sunday Times' annual 100 Best Companies to work for rankings, with Mills & Reeve the sole representative from the UK's top 50 law firms by revenue.

Mills & Reeve features at number 90 in The Sunday Times' rankings, compared with number 72 last year.

The firm is one of only five law firms to feature in the top 100, with Mishcon de Reya rated as the best legal employer in 28th place, Lewis Silkin featuring in 43rd place, Baker & McKenzie entering the rankings for the first time at 59th place and Brabners Chaffe Street featuring at number 81.

Mishcons was praised in categories such as work life balance, wellbeing, teamwork and 'giving back' – which includes charity fundraising, volunteering and providing pro bono advice.

A number of law firms have dropped out of the top 100 rankings, including Manchester's Pannone, Freeth Cartwright and Cripps Harries Hall. Pannone was the highest ranked law firm last year at number 18 and had featured within the top 10 for the six preceding years.

Lewis Silkin managing partner Ian Jeffery commented: "Many of the values which we believe underpin our 'rather more human' approach to employee engagement and working with our clients are reflected in these listings. It's great to see our efforts recognised in this way."

Bakers London managing partner Gary Senior said: "The ranking reflects the effort we have placed into enabling our people to be the best they can be, and it is pleasing to see such high levels of our employees' engagement."

Last year CMS Cameron McKenna, Olswang, Charles Russell and Berwin Leighton Paisner all fell out of the top 100 rankings.
