Weightmans is set to acquire the insurance division of Vizards Wyeth next month, including the firm's senior partner Mark Newman.
The deal, which will take effect on 1 April, will see around 25 lawyers joining Weightmans, including 13 partners. Weightmans will also take over Vizards' Dartford office, while those lawyers operating from Vizards' London base will join Weightmans' existing London base.
It is currently unclear what is happening to the remaining lawyers and support staff at Vizards which, according to its website, has 19 partners.
Weightmans managing partner Patrick Gaul (pictured) said: "Vizards Wyeth is very much in our market space and it makes a lot of sense for us to join forces with another team that has a good insurance following to grow our capabilities even further and improve and expand our reach."
He added: "It will also give us the critical mass that we're looking for in the South East. The team is very strong in product liability for example, which will help to strengthen our offering to insurance and public sector clients."
Vizards' insurance partner Brian Williams said: "We are delighted to agree terms with Weightmans and become part of an outstanding national practice."
The agreement with Vizards comes after talks between the two firms were first announced in January this year. Weightmans is still in ongoing discussions with national firm Mace & Jones about some form of tie-up, with an agreement expected in the coming weeks.
Mace & Jones specialises in employment and dispute resolution and has three offices across the UK in Liverpool, Manchester and Knutsford, Cheshire. According to its website Mace & Jones has 34 partners.
