Crowell & Moring has recruited Sidley Austin international trade partner Laurent Ruessmann to head up the US firm's European trade practice in Brussels.

Ruessmann joined the firm this week as the first partner in Crowell's local European trade group.

He left Sidley last summer following a client conflict and has been working with the firm as co-counsel for his remaining clients.

He co-founded Sidley's Brussels office in 2003 after joining as a partner from Hogan & Hartson.

Ruessmann said: "Crowell's Brussels office is really growing at the moment and I'm looking forward to helping them build up the international trade practice on the EU side as well as the US.

"I have been in Brussels for many years, so I feel that I can bring a lot to Crowell from my experience in the region."

Former Crowell European trade practice head Robert MacLean left the firm to join legacy Hammonds last September.
