K&L Gates has launched a real estate practice in Paris with the hire of a three-lawyer team from Simmons & Simmons.

The team, which joined K&L Gates last week (14 March), is headed by partner Edouard Vitry and also includes counsel Joanna Klat and associate Benjamin Chouai.

Vitry, who has a broad real estate practice including investment, finance, construction and development work, joined Simmons in 2006 and became a partner in 2008. He previously worked at legacy Richard Butler.

His hire takes the number of partners in K&L Gates' Paris arm to five, with the move leaving Simmons without a real estate partner in France.

Vitry said: "The Paris region is the largest real estate market in Europe. I am excited to join K&L Gates because, since it opened in Paris three years ago, it has already grown a lot.

"I am enthusiastic to be joining the firm at what is effectively the beginning of its story in Paris. Because it's an international firm this is also a good opportunity for us to increase our client base and advise K&L Gates' international clients on French real estate law."

K&L Gates' Paris expansion comes after the firm last month launched an office in Brussels. The firm has launched six European offices in recent years, opening in London in 2005, Berlin in 2007, Paris in 2008, Frankfurt in 2009, and Moscow and Warsaw in 2010.
