Latham & Watkins has opened a new office in Boston with seven hires from a trio of US firms, reports The Am Law Daily.

Joining the new base are four lawyers from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, two from Bingham McCutchen and one from Proskauer Rose.

In a statement, Latham managing partner Robert Dell said the Boston market appeals to the firm due to the presence of "companies focused on evolving technologies and the venture capital firms and investment banks that fuel and support their growth." The firm plans to use the new office as a springboard to expand its global private equity practice, he added.

Joining from WilmerHale are corporate lawyers John Chory, Susan Mazur, Philip Rossetti and Peter Handrinos, all of whom are joining as partners. Rossetti will be managing partner of the new office. The quartet all focus on emerging companies in the technology, clean technology and life sciences industries.

In addition, Hans Brigham and Julie Scallen are joining from Bingham – the former as a partner, the latter as counsel – while private equity partner Alexander Temel, who is joining from Proskauer, will chair the office's corporate department.

Rossetti has acted for clients including JP Morgan, Oppenheimer & Co and CIBC World Markets, while Temel's past clients include Goldman Sachs, Great Hill Partners and Housatonic Partners.

A source close to the firm confirmed that Latham is planning to hire additional staff for the Boston office at all levels. The firm currently has roughly 2,000 lawyers across 31 domestic and international offices.
