A trio of offshore law firms has announced new partner promotions for 2011, with Conyers Dill & Pearman, Appleby and Mourant Ozannes all boosting their partnerships.
Conyers Dill is promoting three lawyers to partner with effect from 1 April, with Cayman Islands investment funds lawyer Gene DaCosta, Bermuda corporate associate Peter Ch'ng – who focuses on funds and insurance – and Dubai associate Fawaz Elmalki – who focuses on funds and Islamic finance – all joining the partnership. The promotions will take the number of partners at the firm to 48.
Appleby is adding one lawyer to its partnership, with Jersey lawyer Alex Last becoming a partner in the corporate and commercial department on 1 April. The firm is also making three counsel promotions. Last's promotion will take Appleby's partnership to 83.
Meanwhile, Mourant Ozannes has made up two new partners, with trusts practice group head Morven McMillan, who joined in October from Charles Russell as a counsel, and funds senior associate Julian Fletcher both being appointed to the partnership in the firm's Cayman Islands office.
Promotions at Conyers Dill and Appleby are down on last year, when Conyers Dill made up seven new partners and Appleby made up two.
Appleby group managing partner Peter Bubenzer added: "This partner promotions round is a bit smaller than usual but that is just a matter of the people who are coming through our ranks. We've been recruiting a lot of young lawyers who are starting to come through and no doubt we'll see them promoted to the partnership in the future."
Conyers Dill chairman John Collis said: "It is a privilege and a pleasure to welcome this group of longstanding and highly experienced individuals to the partnership. These promotions reflect the regions that we are keen to boost."
