Bird & Bird is set to launch a six-lawyer office in Hamburg next month.
The office, which will open on 1 May, will be the firm's fourth in Germany and its first new base in Europe since September 2008, when the firm launched in four Central and Eastern Europe countries.
Joining the office will be a six-strong team from local boutique Recore Business Lawyers which specialises in real estate, corporate, M&A and restructuring work.
Recore founding partners Frank Moerchen and Thomas Demmel are joining Bird & Bird as partners, alongside senior European consultants Oliver Koster, Kurt Luka and Ole Bruhl and senior associate Gertrun Romeis.
The firm is planning further expansion to cover all areas of commercial and business law for its clients in the region.
Bird & Bird CEO David Kerr commented: "Our new office in Hamburg strengthens our coverage in the northern European region, establishing a strong link between our offices in the rest of Germany and Stockholm and Helsinki. Hamburg is a key commercial centre and jurisdictional location for several of our key sectors."
Moerchen added: "It will be particularly exciting for us to be able to draw upon such a large international network with Bird & Bird. We want to use our know-how to considerably expand both the corporate practice group at Bird & Bird and the existing client base. We are looking forward to working on exciting projects in a new environment."
The news comes after Bird & Bird announced its partner promotions last week (15 April), making up two partners in the firm's City HQ. The round marks a significant decline on last year, when the firm made up 10.
