Pannone has launched a separate business unit to offer its legal services through organisations such as retailers and insurers, to take advantage of opportunities under the Legal Services Act (LSA).

The national firm has formed a white label division that will see it carry out legal work for organisations wanting to sell legal services to customers under their own brand names.

The division, named Affinity Solutions, will involve 85 of the firm's lawyers carrying out work commissioned by non-legal organistions, without reference to Pannone's name. The lawyers will continue to work on other firm work.

No decision has been reached yet on how revenues from the unit will be split between Pannone and the organisation commissioning the services, however one possibility could see the creation of an Alternative Business Structure jointly owned by Pannone and the other organisation, with each taking a specified share of the profits.

The firm has already signed a deal with one leading company and is in talks with several others.

Pannone personal injury partner and head of Affinity Solutions, Andrew Morton, said: "We have created a separate division in the firm that enables us to offer a whole range of services to organisations that have large existing customer bases and may want to sell legal advice, as a way of taking advantage of the LSA.

"This will allow retailers and corporations to use the strength of their brand to broaden out their service offering, with the backing of a reliable firm to do all the leg work."

The news comes as Irwin Mitchell has taken its next steps towards becoming one of the first UK firms to convert to an ABS with the appointment of Norton Rose as its legal adviser and Espirito Santo Investment Bank as its financial adviser announced yesterday.

Separately, Taylor Wessing is also set to launch a new business unit that will see it offering technology from client Swiss Post Solutions to other clients as an alternative to outsourcing. The firm will use the technology to offer cheaper legal services to clients, with the system automating some low grade legal work such as due diligence, data mining and contract management services.

The new division, named New Street Solutions is intended to increase efficiency by 60% while preserving quality. Taylor Wessing decided to use the technology instead of offering legal process outsourcing to clients
