Brick Court Chambers has named a new joint head in the wake of Jonathan Sumption QC's appointment to the Supreme Court.

The set has appointed former Bar Council chair Nicholas Green QC to lead the Chambers alongside existing joint-head Jonathan Hirst QC.

The appointment, which took effect yesterday (12 May), follows Sumption stepping down from the post after being named as a Supreme Court Justice earlier this month (4 May).

Green specialises in all aspects of competition, European, regulatory and administrative law and previously served as chairman of the Bar Council during 2010.

He has not been appointed for any fixed term, with commercial law specialist Hirst having held the role since 2005, when both he and Sumption were appointed.

Hirst said: "Brick Court Chambers have been tremendously served by Jonathan Sumption over the past 6 years. The appointment of Nicholas Green QC reflects our Chambers' strength in having capable and innovative lawyers and administrators. His fund of experience brought from his chairmanship of the Bar means that we could not be in better hands."

Sumption's controversial appointment to the Supreme Court marks the first time a barrister has been directly appointed to the UK's highest court in more than 60 years. Some litigators have been upset by his rapid ascension to the top court and his decision to continue advising Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich in a case against Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, which could delay his start date at the Supreme Court until 2012.
