Linklaters is set to open its 27th office worldwide, with the magic circle law firm in the final stages of planning a launch in Abu Dhabi.

The firm is waiting for its licence to open in the Gulf state, but expects to launch the new base as soon as it is granted – which could be within the next month.

Gulf managing partner Sarosh Mewawalla is leading the initiative, with the firm planning to relocate a number of partners to Abu Dhabi. The office will offer banking, corporate, restructuring and project finance advice.

The launch will mark Linklaters' first new office since it opened in Duesseldorf in November 2007 and will mean that all of the magic circle firms – bar Slaughter and May – will have a presence in Abu Dhabi.

Linklaters' Dubai arm currently acts as a hub for the firm's activities in the Middle East. The office opened in February 2006 and has since grown from eight lawyers to 35, of which six are partners.

Mewawalla commented: "We're very positive about the opportunities in Abu Dhabi and the wider Gulf market and we're currently in discussions with the authorities in Abu Dhabi in relation to starting up an office there."

News of the office launch comes after Linklaters' newly-elected senior partner Robert Elliott confirmed that further expansion in the Middle East and Asia will be among his key priorities when he formally replaces David Cheyne in the management post on 1 October.
