Former Clifford Chance (CC) senior partner Stuart Popham has secured a new role as a non-executive director at Legal & General.

The appointment, which Popham will take up in July, will see him act as an independent non-executive director on the insurer's risk, remuneration and nominations committees.

Popham (pictured) was CC's senior partner for eight years before he left the magic circle firm at the end of April.

He will work with Legal & General alongside a number of other appointments he already held while at CC, as well as the high-profile part-time role as vice-chair of EMEA banking at Citigroup, which he took up in March this year.

He is also chairman of UK financial services lobbying group TheCityUK, a member of the advisory council at Said Business School at the University of Oxford, and a council member of Chatham House.

Legal & General chairman John Stewart said: "I am very pleased that Stuart has agreed to join the Board of Legal & General. He brings a very strong intellect and the global experience forged during his eight-year tenure at the helm of one of the world's largest and most successful law firms. I very much look forward to working with him."

Popham stepped down as senior partner at CC at the end of last year when he handed over the role to London finance partner Malcolm Sweeting. Before that he was head of the global banking and finance practice from 1999 to 2003, and head of the London finance and securities group from 1992 to 1995.

The veteran banking partner was also awarded honourary QC status in this year's silk round.
