Irwin Mitchell real estate head Jon Vivian has taken on a new leadership role heading the firm's London business group.

The appointment means that in addition to leading the real estate practice, Vivian (pictured) will oversee the office's corporate, commercial, regulatory and litigation practices, which sit within the umbrella business legal services group.

He will work alongside the firm's overall business legal services chief executive, Niall Baker, who will continue to oversee the division across the firm as a whole.

Vivian commented: "We're having a good look at our strategy at the moment, making sure that as a group we are working towards a common goal and concentrating on the areas we want to expand. It is a very exciting time for me and the firm. We are determined to grow the business legal services division and I will be working in partnership with Niall to make sure that happens in London."

He said the firm would look to grow its London business legal services division opportunistically.

The move comes after Irwin Mitchell overhauled its management structure and practice stream makeup in May in preparation for its planned conversion to an alternative business structure later this year.

The firm, which confirmed in April that it intended to take advantage of the Legal Services Act and was considering taking external capital, has split its business into a limited liability partnership and a separate holding company and appointed a new board to manage both parts of the firm.

Vivian joined Irwin Mitchell from SJ Berwin in November, bringing with him three partners and 12 associates.
