DWF has strengthened its intellectual property (IP) practice with a partner hire from Watson Burton.

Ed Meikle, who specialises in advising on the capture, protection, commercialisation and enforcement of all IP rights, is set to join DWF's Newcastle office later this year.

Meikle has particular expertise advising on the legal issues involved in the development, management and protection of brands and technology. He acts for national and multinational businesses, including Premier League football clubs, FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies.

DWF managing partner Andrew Leaitherland commented: "We are delighted that Ed will be joining our Newcastle office, servicing clients on a national basis. Ed is a highly regarded specialist working on contentious and non-contentious IP matters advising household names throughout the UK."

"His commitment to outstanding client service has secured his reputation as a key player in the region and across the UK."

DWF announced its 2010-11 financial results last month (30 June), posting a double-digit increase in turnover for the second year in a row, up 15% to £83m.

The northwest firm also saw profits per equity partner (PEP) rise 17% to £390,000 as a result of a 35% increase in net profit to £12m, alongside an increase in partner headcount from 120 to 134.
