Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC) and Gateley look set to enter Legal Week's 2010-11 rankings of the top 50 UK law firms by revenue.

Gateley will make its debut in the table, which will be published in full in the next edition of Legal Week (21 July), on the back of a 23% hike in turnover to £63m, up from £51.2m in 2009-10.

Meanwhile, RPC looks set to re-enter the top 50 at number 50 after seeing a 4% rise in revenues to £61.8m. The pair will replace LG, which has fallen out of this year's rankings on the back of a 9% drop in revenues, and defunct firm Halliwells, which went into administration last summer.

Gateley attributed its revenue growth to its acquisition of 38 partners from Halliwells last summer. However, while the Halliwells acquisition drove up turnover, profits per equity partner (PEP) fell as a consequence of these and other partner
hires, decreasing from £319,000 to £240,000.

Gateley co-senior partner Mike Ward said: "We had projected the impact on our turnover would be a little higher, but you are never quite sure when a business has been through an insolvency process what the fallout is going to be. In terms of our fall in PEP, we decided to maintain our teams and invest in our people to put us in a good place for the next two to three years."

LG saw its turnover fall to £59m from £64.9m in 2009-10, with the drop knocking the firm out of the top 50, where it featured at number 47 last year. PEP also fell, standing at £412,000 for 2010-11 down from £460,000 the previous year – a dip of 10.4%.

LG managing partner Hugh Maule said: "The decrease in turnover this year cannot be attributed to one particular area, but the majority of practice groups saw a dip in revenue due to difficult economic circumstances."
