Squire Sanders & Dempsey's partnership has approved plans to acquire the majority of Minter Ellison's Perth office.

The partnership voted in favour of the deal on Tuesday (16 August), with the acquisition set to gift the transatlantic firm around 80 lawyers in Australia – including 14 partners.

The deal, which was first reported by Legal Week earlier this month (5 August) is set to take effect before the end of October.

It will bring the firm's global headcount to more than 1,300 lawyers operating out of 36 offices across 17 countries.

The tie-up significantly strengthens Squire Sanders' Asia-Pacific practice, which also includes offices in Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

It also adds weight to the firm's energy and natural resources, major projects and engineering and construction practices.

Squire Sanders chair and global chief executive James Maiwurm told Legal Week: "We like the Western Australian legal market a lot. We like it for the role it will play in our Asia-Pacific focus and for its strong resources and energy sector approach. We're confident that it makes sense for the long haul"

Minter Ellison's Perth managing partner John Poulsen will become managing partner of Squire Sanders Australia.

He said: "It's a new lease of life for the Perth office and another step in an exciting journey. One of the wonderful things is this combination will allow us to provide an enhanced service to our domestic and international clients."

As previously reported, 14 of the 19 partners at Minter Ellison's Perth office voted in favour of the merger with Squire Sanders, with one partner set to join a local boutique and four other electing to remain at Minter Ellison, where they will open a new office in Perth in Australia.

Minter Ellison expects to have between eight and 10 partners in the Perth office by the time of the re-launch, with plans to expand to around a dozen partners in the following months.

The news comes after Clifford Chance launched in Australia in May this year through a tie-up with local outfits Cochrane Lishman Carson Luscombe and Chang Pistilli & Simmons, gifting it offices in Perth and Sydney.

Holman Fenwick Willan also launched in Perth on 1 May, marking the firm's third base in Australia, while Ashurst is currently eyeing up the local market via a potential tie-up with Blake Dawson.
