Charles Russell has recruited ex-Premier League lawyer Simon Johnson to help develop its sports and media group.

Johnson joined the firm as a consultant this month, after most recently serving as the chief operating officer for England's bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, after which he left to set up his own consultancy in February this year.

Prior to his role as COO for the World Cup bid, Johnson held roles including director of corporate affairs at the Football Association and director of legal and business affairs at the Premier League.

He also spent 10 years at ITV, the majority of which was as director of rights and business affairs, which saw him take responsibility for all of ITV's sports negotiations and programme rights strategy.

He will work with Charles Russell on a part-time basis alongside running his consultancy  – Simon Johnson Rights & Business – which focuses on the sports and media industries.

Johnson added: "I have worked with the team at Charles Russell for many years. I know from my dealings with them at the FA that they are outstanding lawyers, with a great understanding of the sports and media industries. I am looking forward to lending my experience, knowledge and expertise to help Charles Russell to grow its business."

Charles Russell has worked with the FA since 2005.

The news follows the recent appointment of Charles Russell to the pro bono panel for the London 2012 Olympic Games, with the firm chosen to offer sports, defamation and privacy advice.
