Baker Botts has strengthened its London office with the hire of corporate partner Neil Foster from Field Fisher Waterhouse.

Foster, who focuses on M&A, venture capital and private equity, will join the US firm's 11-partner City base, which is headed up by corporate partner Tony Higginson.

He joined Field Fisher in 2006 from US firm Morrison & Foerster, and focuses on sectors including technology and telecoms, media and life sciences.

While at Field Fisher, Foster handled a number of high-profile deals for the firm, including acting for Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov on his £75m purchase of a stake in Arsenal Football Club, as well as advising security software company Sophos on its $830m (£527m) sale to Apax in 2010.

Other clients he has worked with include Liberty Global, Vernalis, Echostar Satellite Corporation, Zonemedia, Exclusive Media, Pacific Crossing, Arcadia Biosciences and Creative Technologies.

Field Fisher corporate head Andrew Blankfield commented: "I can confirm that Neil Foster is leaving Field Fisher to join Baker Botts, although an exact leaving date is still to be confirmed. We wish Neil all the best for the future and thank him for his contribution to the firm's corporate practice over the last few years."

Despite its relatively small London base, Baker Botts has made several high-profile hires in the last year, including a nine-partner team from now-defunct firm Howrey. Baker Botts declined to comment.
