Jones Day has strengthened its French antitrust and competition law practice with a partner hire from Latham & Watkins.

Eric Barbier de La Serre is set to join Jones Day's Paris office next month (19 October) as the second partner in its local antitrust and European law practice.

Barbier de La Serre, who joined Latham in 2007 and made partner in 2009, focuses on French and European competition law with a particular emphasis on antitrust litigation, state aid and merger control matters.

Before joining Latham, Barbier de La Serre worked at the European Court of First Instance in Luxembourg, having previously spent four years with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

Jones Day global antitrust and competition practice head Phil Proger commented: "While each jurisdiction is unique, we have long recognised that effective competition law counseling and litigation requires a global strategic vision in addition to strong local practices and experience with specific industries. Eric's arrival is a significant addition to our already formidable capabilities by all three of these measures."

The hire is the latest partner addition to Jones Day's Paris office, coming after the US firm hired a four-lawyer team from Norton Rose earlier this month. The team, led by Norton Rose's French corporate head Herve Castelnau, joined Jones Day on 1 September. It also includes three associates, two of which were promoted to counsel in the move.
