Linklaters has taken a lead role on Russian mineral company EuroChem's $974m (£623m) asset sale to BASF, the world's largest chemical company, reports The Am Law Daily.

Linklaters is advising new client EuroChem on the purchase of fertilizer assets from BASF, including its operations in Belgium, as well as a 50% stake in French joint venture Pec-Rhin.

The magic circle firm's team is being led by corporate partner Sarah Wiggins in London and banking and finance partner Pieter Puelinckx in Brussels. The deal is the first that Linklaters has handled for EuroChem.

BASF, which is based in Germany, handled most of the legal work on its side of the deal in-house. Transactional attorney Stefan Sechting led a BASF team alongside antitrust lawyer Sascha Reichardt, corporate lawyer Virginia Hennes, BASF Antwerpen legal counsel Hans Matthysen, and BASF France general counsel Patrick Guyot.

BASF, whose GC is David Stryker, often relies on its in-house lawyers to handle the bulk of its transactional work. Stryker last year led an in-house team advising on BASF's $3.8bn (£2.4bn) acquisition of German chemicals producer Cognis, a deal which also saw Arnold & Porter provide antitrust advice.

Meanwhile, Koen Selleslags, a senior lead corporate lawyer in DLA Piper's Antwerp office, assisted Matthysen on certain aspects of the sale to EuroChem.

In snapping up BASF's Belgian units, EuroChem beat a competing offer from Norwegian fertilizer manufacturer Yara, which was advised by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
