Field Fisher Waterhouse has appointed its first-ever chief operating officer (COO) to oversee the firm's business services and support functions.

Charlie Keeling, who has been with Field Fisher since 2008 as its human resources (HR) director, will also become a member of the firm's board alongside his new role.

Keeling joined Field Fisher three years ago from technology and consulting firm BearingPoint, where he was European head of HR. He has also worked as a management consultant, dealing with strategy reviews and business process improvement.

The new COO role has seen him handed a remit to develop the firm's operational processes with a view to promoting international growth, working alongside newly-appointed managing partner Matthew Lohn (pictured).

The firm has said it will not rule out back-office outsourcing as a part of its growth strategy, after signing an £18.5m outsourcing deal earlier this year. The deal saw the firm outsource its European facilities department to Rollright Facilities, which now manages Field Fisher's 20-person facilities team in London, as well as giving the firm access to Rollright's staff across Europe.

Lohn said: "As our client base and operations become increasingly international, professionalising the management of the firm to ensure a co-ordinated approach across all regions is essential."

He added: "Appointing a COO will support further growth and integration across the firm's offices and Charlie's background in HR and finance, as well as his track record in management consultancy, are an excellent combination."
