Allen & Overy (A&O), Clyde & Co and Centrica were among the winners at last night's (1 December) British Legal Awards, in London's Old Billingsgate Market.
A&O scooped up the coveted law firm of the year award, seeing off competition from Clydes, Hogan Lovells, Kirkland & Ellis, Mishcon de Reya and Stephenson Harwood to win the prize.
The firm impressed a judging panel chaired by chairman of the Financial Reporting Review Panel Bill Knight and including BAA general counsel Carol Hui, and former Linklaters partner Nick Eastwell, now chief adviser on City law firms to the Solicitors Regulation Authority, with a genuine international success story "achieved thanks to some bold investment decisions during the downturn."
Meanwhile Clydes senior partner Michael Payton won the Editor's Award for Managing/Senior Partner of the Year on the back of a year in which the firm's bold merger with key rival Barlow Lyde & Gilbert went live last month (1 November), while a merger with Canada's Nicholl Paskell-Mede (NPM) went live on 1 September.
The City of London Law Society opted to present its Life Time Achievement Award to former International Bar Association (IBA) President Francis Neate for an active career in the legal sector which, aside from his significant work for the IBA, included a long career in private practice, including time at magic circle firm Slaughter and May in both corporate and banking as well as litigation.
Notably, QualitySolicitors was awarded the Law Firm Innovation Award, with the fast-growing high-street franchise having come up against shortlisted firms including A&O and Norton Rose.
Among practice awards, Slaughter and May was named M&A team of the year for its role on BA's merger with Iberia, with Ashurst picking up banking, finance or restructuring team of the year and property team, Wragge & Co winning litigation and regulatory team and Herbert Smith securing the award for commercial team of the year.
In-house awards saw Centrica's Grant Dawson named General Counsel of the Year, while Thames Water took home the In-house Award for Innovation. Man Group won legal department of the year.
Among other awards, Garrigues was named European Law Firm of the Year, while Al Tamimi & Co won the prize for the Middle East region. The London Office of the Year award went to Weil Gotshal & Manges which had been up against US rivals Latham & Watkins, Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan and the City office of expansive Italian independent NCTM.
