Charles Russell and Blackstone Chambers have taken advisory roles for England footballer Wayne Rooney on his successful appeal against a three-match ban at next year's European Championships.

Charles Russell commercial litigation partner Jonathan Ellis and Blackstone Chambers' Adam Lewis QC represented Rooney in his appeal to European football governing body UEFA, which yesterday (8 December) saw his ban reduced from three matches to two.

The Manchester United star had been suspended for three games after receiving a red card in England's final qualifier for Euro 2012 against Montenegro in October.

The decision taken by UEFA yesterday to reduce the ban will mean Rooney can now take part in England's third group game in Euro 2012 against Ukraine next June.

UEFA has also handed Rooney a one game ban suspended for four years, which can be enforced if he commits a similar offence in a UEFA competition at any point over the next four years.

The Football Assocation's head of legal James Bonington and commercial arbitration partner Antonio Rigozzi from Swiss law firm Levy Kaufmann-Kohler also advised on the action.

The FA is a longstanding client of Charles Russell, with the firm one of eight appointed to the FA legal panel in February 2010.

Ellis said: "Charles Russell is delighted to have represented the FA and Wayne Rooney in the appeal before UEFA. As an England fan it is great that he is now able to take part in England's third game at Euro 2012."
