Norton Rose has added to its international natural resources expertise with one partner hire each in Australia and South Africa.
Baker & McKenzie construction and engineering lawyer Simon Bellas has moved to Norton Rose in Perth, while Bowman Gilfillan commodities-specialist finance partner Lodewyk Meyer has joined the firm's Johannesburg office.
Bellas, who was a senior associate at Bakers, has joined Norton Rose as a partner. His practice focuses on litigation and international arbitration as well as project and contract advice. Bellas has worked on disputes arising out construction and engineering projects in Australia and Asia, with a focus on the oil and gas industry. He was most recently based in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Norton Rose Australia managing partner-elect Wayne Spanner said: "His appointment will strengthen our construction and engineering offering and underpin the growth opportunities in the Perth market. His focus on the energy sector, particularly in oil and gas, is also an excellent match to our global practice."
Norton Rose said the hire makes the 22nd new addition coming in at partner level since legacy Deacons merged with the Norton Rose Group in January 2010 to become Norton Rose Australia.
Meanwhile, in South Africa, Meyer's areas of specialisation include structured trade and commodity finance, agricultural finance, acquisition finance, senior debt lending, syndicated lending and cross-border financing.
Norton Rose South Africa banking and finance head Riza Moosa, commented: "Lodewyk is widely- recognised as a leading trade and commodity finance lawyer in South Africa, which as a country with a strong commodities base is a major user of trade financing. The commodities market in Africa continues to expand and Lodewyk will play an important role in our practice not only here but also across our global trade and commodity practice."
Deneys Reitz became Norton Rose South Africa 1 June this year, becoming part of the Norton Rose Group Swiss Verein which has around 2,600 lawyers, including 795 partners, across 39 offices.
