Hogan Lovells is set to lose five highly-regarded energy partners in its Washington DC office to DLA Piper, including global energy co-chief Kevin Lipson.

The five-partner team, which focuses on the natural gas sector, has been hired with a remit to build up DLA's burgeoning US energy practice in an area that has seen much corporate activity over the past year.

Lipson will be joined at DLA by partners Lee Alexander, Stefan Krantz, John Lilyestrom and Christopher Schindler. The exits will leave Hogan Lovells with 15 remaining energy-focused partners in Washington.

The team have represented electric and natural gas companies in a variety of areas, including both enforcement and transactional work.

Commenting on the departures, Hogan Lovells co-chief executive David Harris commented: "The market for energy lawyers is very buoyant and in the past 12 months we have been particularly successful."

Hogan Lovells has expanded its energy practice in recent months, with the firm recruiting City-based Hunton & Williams partners Matthew Williams and John Deacon in May last year, as well as McDermott Will & Emery partners David Locascio, Jose Luis Vittor and Michael Yuffee.

London-based energy co-head Matthew Williams will now manage the practice. It is unclear whether another US co-head will be appointed to replace Lipson.

DLA declined to comment.
