Curtis Mallet-Prevost Colt & Mosle is set to open an office in Kuwait with the hire of former Denton Wilde Sapte partner David Pfeiffer, reports The Am Law Daily.

Pfeiffer, who has more than 16 years experience in Kuwait, has been tasked with launching the US firm's operations in the oil-rich country.

He joined legacy Dentons in 2008 from Bryan Cave, where he was managing partner of the firm's Kuwait office, before leaving SNR Denton last autumn as the firm overhauled its Middle East management and strategy.

Mashora Advocates & Legal Consultants, a 25-lawyer Kuwaiti law firm previously affiliated with Bryan Cave, will now be associated with Curtis Mallet.

Curtis Mallet is known for its oil and gas expertise, and recently advised the Republic of Kazakhstan on a $1bn (£636m) deal for a stake in an international oil consortium. The firm also has Middle Eastern offices in Dubai and Oman.

Separately, fellow US firm Baker & McKenzie has confirmed that it intends to establish an office in India if the country relaxes its restrictive rules on the local operations of foreign firms.

Global chairman Eduardo Leite told Indian publication The Economic Times that members of the firm's India practice group have been advising Indian companies on their global operations for more than 50 years, but that regulatory hurdles were preventing his firm from doing more for Indian companies.

Leite said that if India's barriers to foreign firms were to be relaxed, Bakers would like to "reach an association with a local firm" in order to eventually establish a presence in the country.
